epigenetics & stress--- Stress Management as EPIGENETIC MANAGEMENT for Neuro-Developmental & Psychiatric Disorders

10/23/2022

Could keeping Neuro-Diverse People within "Executive Functioning Homeostasis" to MANAGE STRESS RESPONSES help manage EPIGENETIC CHALLENGES?

We already know that managing stress is important --- It is probably more important than we realize.

BUT IT'S COMPLICATED --- IF WE'RE NOT DEVELOPING STRENGTHS --- IT'S PROBABLY NOT GOING TO WORK

Conjecture

Epigenetics is more and more seen as a component of Neuro-Developmental Differences, Psychiatric Disorders, Cancer and Auto-Immune Diseases.

Further, these Epigenetic impacts are often going to the IMMUNE SYSTEM.

Additionally, Social Behavior is now being conceptualized as a DELICATE BALANCE of INNATE & ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY.

Further, it is becoming more obvious that people with the challenges above almost by definition have OUT OF BALANCE or DYSREGULATED IMMUNE SYSTEMS.]

Stress Hormone Causes Epigenetic Changes | National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Stress Hormone Causes Epigenetic Changes.

Researchers found that chronic exposure to a stress hormone causes modifications to DNA in the brains of mice, prompting changes in gene expression.

The new finding provides clues into how chronic stress might affect human behavior.

The Role of Stress and Chronic GI Symptoms in Autism

Anxiety is also elevated in autism and this heightened state of distress occurs across the full age range. Research has shown, for example, that children on the autism spectrum are more likely to suffer from anxiety with close to 40 percent having at least one diagnosable anxiety disorder (Van Steenel, Bögels, & Perrin, 2011).

Given that both anxiety and GI problems are high in autism, it’s interesting to ponder whether or not there is a link between the two.

Research suggests that there is. Mazurek and colleagues (2013), for example, found that autistic children with GI conditions had higher rates of both anxiety and sensory over-responsivity.

There may be common underlying mechanisms that are unique to autism that influence the association between anxiety and GI problems. Some areas of the GI system which have been found to be impacted in autism include:

  • Increased intestinal permeability
  • Altered intestinal microbiota
  • Altered Serotonin metabolism

However, it is important to note that the association between emotional distress and GI symptoms also exists for those who are not autistic.

There is an increasingly growing body of literature demonstrating a relationship between emotional distress and GI symptoms for the population at large.

In some ways, this is not surprising given the multiple ways in which the GI tract and nervous system interact.

The interactions between the GI tract and the nervous system are so close that the gut is sometimes referred to as “the Second Brain”.

Feeling Stressed? It Can Make ADHD Symptoms Seem Worse

Writing in the Journal of Attention Disorders, researchers note that ADHD symptoms are associated with stress, especially for those adults who primarily have the inattentive presentation. Chronic stress makes symptoms worse, and even causes chemical and architectural changes to the brain, affecting the brain’s ability to function.

In Nature Neuroscience, researchers note that stress affects the prefrontal cortex, the same location of the brain affected by ADHD. There, stress reduces neuronal firing and impairs cognitive abilities.

Dr. Murray says that research has shown repeatedly that stress causes changes to the brain. There is a decrease in the executive functioning abilities of the brain, often seen in the person’s ability to organize information and activities, and to manage emotions.

“What we can see over time, especially when stress is at the level we could consider toxic or chronic—or traumatic—you can see some effects on the brain,” she says.

“It’s both brain structure, and size of some specific sections, along with brain function, as related to some of the brain chemicals.

There is a reduced cognitive capacity for making decisions, goal-setting and problem-solving—the things we think of as related to cognitive self-regulation.”

The Dyslexia-Stress-Anxiety Connection

Stress and anxiety increase when we’re in situations over which we have little or no control (a car going off the road, tripping on the stairs, reading in public).

All people, young and old, can experience overwhelming stress and exhibit signs of anxiety, but children, adolescents, and adults with dyslexia are particularly vulnerable.

That’s because many individuals do not fully understand the nature of their learning disability, and as a result, tend to blame themselves for their own difficulties.

Years of self-doubt and self recrimination may erode a person’s self-esteem, making them less able to tolerate the challenges of school, work, or social interactions and more stressed and anxious.

Many individuals with dyslexia have experienced years of frustration and limited success, despite countless hours spent in special programs or working with specialists.

Their progress may have been agonizingly slow and frustrating, rendering them emotionally fragile and vulnerable.

Some have been subjected to excessive pressure to succeed (or excel) without the proper support or training.

Others have been continuously compared to siblings, classmates, or co-workers, making them embarrassed, cautious, and defensive.

Researchers Reveal Possible Molecular Blood Signature for Suicide in Major Depression

Neuroscience News

Summary:   Researchers have identified a blood biomarker that predicts the risk of suicide in patients with major depressive disorder.

The biomarker also can help researchers understand the molecular changes in suicide victims.

A University of California, Irvine-led team of researchers, along with members of the Pritzker Research Consortium, has developed an approach to identify blood biomarkers that could predict the suicide risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) patients.

More Evidence that the Immune System is more complicated than we thought:  Alzheimer's and the immune system's  Response to "HIERARCHY"

10/19/2022

This latest conceptualization of "ALZHEIMER'S" as an AUTOIMMUNE CONDITION is IMPORTANT.
This further develops this idea of COGNITIVE DIFFERENCE/DISABILITY as implicating the IMMUNE SYSTEM --- and the immune system is implicated also with:
  • Developmental Differences from Down Syndrome to ADHD & Autism, etc. and
  • Psychiatric Disorders
Additionally people with DEVELOPMENTAL DIFFERENCES/DISORDERS and PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS are more at risk for various forms of DEMENTIA.

Further, many people with PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS do have some form of AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE --- THYROID DISEASE being one of the most common.

Finally, many AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES as well as CANCER have PSYCHIATRIC SYMPTOMS.

So there are MANY MANIFESTATIONS of a "DYSREGULATED" IMMUNE SYSTEM ---- some of those involve:
  • MOVEMENT
  • PAIN
  • COGNITIVE CHALLENGES (this is new), and
  • SOCIAL BEHAVIOR (this is new)
We are living in a time of LARGE SCALE ISSUES with CHRONIC DISEASE (including AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE & CANCER), DEVELOPMENTAL DIFFERENCES/DISORDERS, PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS and DEMENTIA.

People have lived with these challenges and sometimes benefits for a long time:
  • But they weren't living as long as we are generally;
  • They didn't have the TECHNOLOGY to GO DEEP in their understandings of this the way we do.
It has taken widespread low grade inflammation to medium to high inflammation across the globe to expose these common health issues.
BETTER DIET & EXERCISE are essential --- BUT we need to start addressing the challenges of SYSTEMIC DEVELOPMENTAL INFLAMMATION ---
  • If we do ----that in itself could help reduce inflammation --- BECAUSE our IMMUNE SYSTEMS as SOCIAL ANIMALS are plugged into the SOCIAL ORDER.*
  • We want to take that ETHOS of the MARINES that we're not going to leave anyone behind --- and apply that to PUBLIC HEALTH.
Sapolsky on Free Will
I don't agree with everything in the video above --- BUT Sapolsky makes some important points about understanding the BIOLOGY of HUMAN BEHAVIOR ---
  • and it's often not exactly what we thought.

To me, if we want more FREE WILL or CONTROL--- we need better understandings of our own BIOLOGY.

*I think the stuff on the IMMUNE SYSTEM and the "Social Order" sounds pretty out there but I think the research is substantiating that ----
  • Further, one would expect "Social Concerns" for Social Animals to be a BIG Deal.
  • But even for Social Animals --- social concerns are not the only thing.
  • I think the Greeks and probably a lot of other people were right --- IT IS BALANCE -- but it is so much more COMPLICATED than 4 HUMORS --- and most of this balancing act is going on outside our conscious awareness and is involving trillions of factors that relate to:
    • Our Physical Environment
    • Our Social Environment
    • Our Bodily Environment, and
    • Multiple Systems of the Body
I think one way we've tried to deal with this is have MANY HIERARCHIES.  I think we may be coming to the limit of that as a strategy as we've got almost 8 BILLION people and NONE OF THEM want to be at the BOTTOM of the HIERARCHY or HIERARCHIES.

EQUALITY is really recognizing in the words of Pharrell Williams --- "That we're made of the same things."  ---- No we're NOT clones BUT the more we understand how all this works --- the more choice all of us will have --- Further, this is a LONG TERM PROJECT and to get the BEST RESULTS --- we need to recognize that we're all in this together.

New Understandings Matter:  Neuro-Developmental DifferencES, Psychiatric Disorders, Shared Genes, Maternal Immune Activation & Blurred Categories of ADHD & AUTISM

10/7/2022

One of the big reasons we are in CRISIS MODE all the time for Mental Health is that the FOUNDATIONAL UNDERSTANDINGS are NOT SUFFICIENT.

That is starting to change --- BUT so many people are being missed because they don't fit into DSM CATEGORIES that are NOT TRUE FUNDAMENTAL CATEGORIES that track the UNDERLYING BIOLOGY.

BEING PRO SOCIALLY COMPETENT for the SOCIETY is GOOD --- BUT it is not really a SUBSTITUTE FOR UNDERSTANDING those underlying BIOMARKERS.

Conjecture

So One of the BIG New Understandings is that:
  • Psychiatric Disorders are often related to Neuro-Developmental Disorders.

The understanding above is very much related to the research that:
  • Psychiatric Disorders & Neuro-Developmental Differences/Disorders --- Share Common Genes.

These Neuro-Developmental Disorders are so BLURRED that many people are MISSED, and the research is bearing out that people with BLURRED aspects of ADHD and AUTISM are OFTEN MISSED.

Homeostasis / Sustainability may not be HUGELY DIFFERENT for Neuro-Diverse people (sometimes it is) --- BUT it is DIFFERENT ENOUGH that it matters.
  • People with Neuro-Developmental Differences / Disorders have RAMPED UP STRESS RESPONSES --
  • And often because they are OPERATING in TOTAL or SEMI-IGNORANCE -- they are subject to a lot of STRESS, and
  • They are more vulnerable to PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS.

EPIGENETICS --- which can serve as a form of Neuro-Plasticity and Beyond.

Is it the BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS, the WORST, IT DEPENDS?

IT is what it IS --- and we need to understand it a lot better than we do.

EPIGENETICS are more and more recognized as  critical mechanisms in auto-immune diseases, neuro-developmental differences, psychiatric disorders and cancer.

Understanding the connection between Biology & Environment --- and Trying to get beyond Freud on Sexuality

10/4/2022

Val's Note:   An EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH to PSYCHIATRY tends not to have a problem with understanding that BIOLOGY and ENVIRONMENTS are INTER-CONNECTED.

In the video to the right, Dr. Nesse recognizes the SHARED GENES of "PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS."

He doesn't talk about the IMMUNE SYSTEM --- BUT it is pretty hard to ignore the role of the IMMUNE SYSTEM in PSYCHIATRIC and CHRONIC DISEASE in modern society.

Nesse also harkens back to --- Freud and says, "Hey, this all relates to sex."

When we're talking about animals or for that matter plants --- that's such a general statement that its like that HOROSCOPE --- it's so general that it's likely to apply in SOME RESPECT.

I would say like Shakespeare things may not be as they appear.

THE MODERN SEXUAL LANDSCAPE

We've got an explosion of infertility and a wide range of genders and sexual preferences and developmental differences ----
  • I don't think people view infertility as a moral issue generally
  • Our wide-ranging sexual preferences so long as we're not talking about children or coercion --- that's not the FELONY-LEVEL SEX CRIMES.
  • A lot of the increase in DEVELOPMENTAL DIFFERENCES / NEURO-DIVERSITY also is coming with:
    • ramped STRESS RESPONSES
    • EMOTIONAL DYSREGULATION ,
    • DYSREGULATION of MULTIPLE SYSTEMS of the BODY, and
    • CHALLENGES in Executive Functioning
    • while at the same time often bringing "GIFTS" . . .
      • to me, a lot of anxiety that people have about SEX and RELATIONSHIPS is more FUNDAMENTALLY related to these DEVELOPMENTAL ISSUES.

  • I think the GENDER and SEXUAL PREFERENCE LANDSCAPE is so "INTERESTING" that it can "BLIND" us to the fact that there are a lot of DEVELOPMENTAL DIFFERENCES / CHALLENGES in the HETEROSEXUAL Population as well.

  • At some point --- we need to take a MORE SOPHISTICATED look at this.
    • We're really called on to use our CRITICAL THINKING while EDUCATING our MORAL JUDGMENTS and championing already established concepts of SELF-DETERMINATION.

Autoimmunity & Mental Health (2021)

We're on the cusp --- if we're not already there --- of recognizing that the IMMUNE SYSTEM and especially the MATERNAL IMMUNE SYSTEM is a factor (not the only factor) in  NEURO-DIVERSITY and SEXUAL ORIENTATION --- and the RESULTS are DIVERSE.
  • IMMUNE effects during pregnancy are much more COMMON than we think.
  • Further, it's affecting people who would IDENTIFY as HETEROSEXUAL and people who would IDENTIFY with the LGBTQ+ Community.
  • It's affecting people who would might have AUTISM, ADHD, or both as well as OCD, etc.
