                  NEURODiversity          Wednesday

THIS IS HUGE -- The Center for ADAPTIVE STRESS

7/31/2022

To the right is information on the Center for Adaptive  Stress --- Science of Neuro-Diversity.
To me, STRESS is BOTH a key to the STRENGTHS and some of the most problematic BEHAVIORS associated with "Neuro-Diversity" when those ramped up stress responses careen out of control.

We do need a "MEDICAL MODEL of NEURO-DIVERSITY."
  • This is a Major Conceptual  Break-Through
In some ways, this brings us FULL CIRCLE from our criticism from 2015:

When People Complain to Me About the Medical Model ---

I Usually Say What Medical Model -- It's A Sham Medical Model At Best

The Science of Neurodiversity

Our Mission

At the Center for Adaptive Stress, we believe in empowering educators, researchers, and the next generation with tools to make a difference in healing our health, our communities, and our planet.

Through an Evolutionary Stress Framework, we want to build a Neurodiversity-Informed Medical Model.

Our Vision

Center for Stress will be a platform of new scientific models to incorporate evolutionary stress and systems theories into already existing support programs, medical therapies, and neurodiversity initiatives.

Representing a unifying model for a better quality of life for those living on the neurological spectrum and disability cultural integration.

Reasoning, Emotion, Sensory Processing & Homeostasis

Conjecture
  • Ramped Up Sensory Processing is going to CHALLENGE SHORT TERM or WORKING MEMORY.
  • It's probably going to look like "SLOW PROCESSING."
  • I can't remember EVERYTHING.
  • Using PRINCIPLES of LOGIC can help MAKE SENSE of all this SENSORY INFORMATION.

EMOTION
  • Emotion can be PROBLEMATIC, but I would maintain NOT FOR THE REASONS WE THINK.
  • EMOTION is NOT the OPPOSITE of REASON -- we're NOT REASONING in the ABSENCE of EMOTION.
Picture
  • I have been known to say, "This is my major premise, this is minor premise, this is my conclusion ---- WHAT THE HELL ISN'T LOGICAL ABOUT THAT?"
  • I would say the goal is not just to hurl SYLLOGISMS and be a SMART ASS -- it is COMMUNICATION.
  • But if we're SHUTTING DOWN other people's COMMUNICATION on the PRETENSE that it's NOT LOGICAL --- when really we don't have the BANDWIDTH to deal with the EMOTION.
    • That's going to cause a lot of problems in RELATIONSHIPS --
    • It's going to cause a lot of problems in SOCIETY.

EMOTION isn't the OPPOSITE of REASON --- BUT WE HAVE OUR LIMITS
  • We don't have the BANDWIDTH to deal with INTENSE EMOTIONS, EMOTIONAL DYSREGULATION 24/7 as individuals, in relationships, families, or societies.
  • When I say we don't have the "BANDWIDTH" -- I mean BIOLOGICALLY EMOTION/STRESS are OVERLOADING the SYSTEMS of the BODY.
  • AND we are BREAKING OURSELVES AGAINST THOSE LIMITS.
  • That EMOTIONAL/STRESS OVERLOAD is often the RESULT of that very same SENSORY OVERLOAD that is FUELING REASONING.

ANOTHER RELATED CATCH-22
  • If we're SHUTTING DOWN other people's CONCERNS --- whether we think they are "TOO EMOTIONAL" or something else --
  • I think we may be INVITING some problematic EPIGENETIC CHANGES that will RAMP UP EVEN FURTHER --- SENSORY PROCESSING.
HOMEOSTASIS & SENSORY PROCESSING
Picture
  • The problem is --- BALANCE DOESN'T LOOK THE SAME for EVERYONE --- and RAMPED UP SENSORY PROCESSING creates BALANCE CHALLENGES.
  • I don't think it is any accident that Neuro-Diverse people seem to be more subject to BURNOUT.
  • Further, given the association of Neuro-Developmental Differences/Disorders with PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS -- I would say Neuro-Diverse people seem to be more subject to BREAKDOWN.
Alice Merton
No Roots

We're NOT ASPENS --- BUT we are SOCIAL ANIMALS and we are Biologically Plugged into the SOCIAL ORDER --- through among other things the IMMUNE SYSTEM.

A LOT of People are questioning HIERARCHY right now --- just as we're realizing there are not a HANDFUL of FACTORS that identify us as INDIVIDUALS ---- THERE ARE TRILLIONS --- and they are NOT ALL HUMAN.

People are FIGHTING about who is at the BOTTOM of the HIERARCHY because --- it has TANGIBLE IMPACTS to People's Health & Well Being.

Pharrell Williams Freedom
We are from heat
The Electric one
Does it shock you to see, he left us the sun?
The atoms in the air
Organisms in the sea
The Sun, and yes, man
Are made of the same things
REAL HUMAN LIMITATIONS & the NEED for DIFFERENT PARADIGMS

The FLIP SIDE of Pharrell Williams "Freedom" is that we currently are much more limited than we realize --- taking in only a FRACTION OF REALITY.

We are REASONING ANIMALS but it comes at a BIG ENERGY COST

We don't have the BANDWIDTH to just RAMP UP that SENSORY PROCESSING  even relatively MODEST AMOUNTS without SUFFERING SOME CONSEQUENCES.

Earlier Ages --- certainly some prominent Theologians and Philosophers understood that the WORLD / the UNIVERSE / the ULTIMATE REALITY were BEYOND HUMAN COMPREHENSION.

[Interestingly, Spiritual Beliefs in "ONENESS" seem to help people do better.

See Neuroscience News:  "Spirituality Linked to Better Health Outcomes" (July 2022) and
People With a Sense of Oneness Experience Greater Life Satisfaction (April 2019).]

Our COMPREHENSION has increased greatly over the eons and certainly rapidly increasing over the last 50,000 years.

Further, things really picked up with the ENLIGHTENMENT.  BUT the ENLIGHTENMENT/Empirical Science --- has NOT TURNED ON ALL THE LIGHTS -- maybe it ultimately will.

In the meantime, issues of SUSTAINABILITY are plaguing our PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS and our BODILY ENVIRONMENTS.

    (with variable spellings of Neurodiversity)

    NEURODIVERSITY  is BLURRED.

What people are keying off of is:  EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING DIFFERENCES or DEFICITS --- and saying "Hey, that's me."

BUT they are also saying:  "Hey, I've got some BIG TIME STRENGTHS and I need those recognized too."
